Meeting with the UN Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees Ms. Gillian Triggs had in his office today
The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Miltiadis Varvitsiotis.
During the meeting which took place in a good atmosphere, Mr. Varvitsiotis informed Ms. Triggs that on the side of the government, important steps have been taken in terms of the operation of the asylum system, in order to process applications more quickly, as well as with the upgraded Reception and Identification Centers on the islands.
The Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy emphasized that the mission of the Coast Guard is to guard the maritime borders, which are also European borders, and at the same time to protect human life through rescue operations at sea. He also emphasized that the the traffickers' circuits
the traffickers' circuits that put thousands of human lives at risk every day must be crushed.
It is recalled that the Headquarters of the Coast Guard has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees since 2014, which was revised in 2021, while it was agreed to renew it after it expires in 2024.
