The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Mr. Miltiadis Varvitsiotis met today with the Executive Director of FRONTEX Mr. Hans Leitens and the Deputy Director- General in charge of the “Task Force Migration Management” in DG Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission, Mrs. Beate Gminder.
The meeting, which lasted 1.5 hours and took place in a very good atmosphere, focused on the issue of better cooperation between Greece and Frontex, both in the exchange of information and during joint operations, and it was decided to have a channel of communication at the highest level.
Mr. Varvitsiotis underlined the government's firm position for better cooperation with FRONTEX in terms of guarding the maritime borders, which are the borders of Greece and Europe.
During the meeting, videos from recent rescue operations were shown, highlighting the role of the Hellenic Coast Guard in the field of search and rescue, with the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy noting that "the men and women of the Hellenic Coast Guard save lives and don't drown people." Regarding the Pylos tragic incident, he informed the head of Frontex that the judicial investigation is ongoing.
At the meeting, the Chief of the Hellenic Coast Guard Vice-Admiral Georgios Alexandrakis and officers of the Coast Guard, Messrs. Grigoris Apostolou, representative of FRONTEX in Greece and Cyprus and Aristides Psarras, Head of the Greek Immigration Department of DG Home, were also present.
