MMAIP Mr. Yiannis Plakiotakis informed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria on what is happening in the Aegean

Detailed information on the situation in the Aegean regarding the massive influx of foreigners departing from the Turkish coast, often accompanied by Turkish Coast Guard vessels, and the government's decision to safeguard Greece's borders, dominated the meeting of the Minister of Maritime and Insular Policy Yiannis Plakiotakis with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria Alexander Schallenberg.

Τhe Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria underlined that he fully understood Greek concerns and hastened to declare that his country was ready to assist in any appropriate way, while acknowledging that Greece's borders were also the borders of the European Union.

Mr Schallenberg, accompanied by Mrs Hermine Poppeler, the Austrian Ambassador to Athens, was informed of the personnel and media aid requests submitted by the Hellenic Coast Guard to FRONTEX, as well as the timetable and promised that he would personally intervene to speed up the implementation of the Greek demands.

Mr. Plakiotakis thanked the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria for the immediate response and support of his government to the major problem facing the country and stressed that Greece is committed to protecting its borders in every legal way.
